Firewood chopping with an ax is one of the most difficult jobs that owners of solid fuel boilers and stoves encounter every year. Harvesting fuel for the winter or just for a bath turns into a test that lasts for weeks. To facilitate the splitting of firewood, you can get a homemade screw cleaver. This device will speed up the workpiece, reduce the load on the back and protect your hands from corns.

Materials for assembly cleaver:
  • three-phase electric motor 3 kW;
  • carrot screw;
  • large deck or table.

Making wood splitter

The main parts of a wood splitter are a powerful three-phase motor and a screw, also called a carrot. It is a steel cone with a sharp top and high thread along the entire length. The base of the screw has a groove for installation on the motor shaft.

Ready "carrots" can be purchased, ordered from a turner or carved on their own with a machine.

The use of a three-phase 3 kW motor with a low rpm of about 1400 per minute allows you to fix the screw on the motor shaft directly without using a belt drive.

An electric motor with a screw is mounted on a reliable table or a large deck. The outsole of the engine is screwed to the base with powerful fasteners, since it will have a breaking load.

How to use

After starting the motor, a deck for splitting is vertically attached to the top of the rotating cone. The screw is screwed into it like a self-tapping screw and splits the log into 2 log blocks. Claude needs to be served in such a way that her lower end rests on the table with the entire plane. This will eliminate the likelihood of twisting logs and injuring hands.

With special care you need to chop thin wood. They have a small end area, which reduces the reliability of the stop on the table, so they try to rotate on the screw like a propeller until the split. To avoid this, it is important to feed them to the cleaver fully resting on the countertop.
If the top of the cone is not sharp enough, then resting the deck against it, you need to press well. It is much easier to work if the cleaver begins to be screwed into the deck below the middle of its length. If the screw on the motor shaft is too high, then you can install a step from the board on the table so that the log moves slightly higher.
Subject to these rules, the cleaver can be used completely safely. The practical benefit of such a device is enormous, and besides this, during the downtime of the splitter, its engine can be used on a circular and other devices.
