In this review, the author shares the idea and shows how to make a compact but powerful sandblasting machine with your own hands. This homemade product is useful for cleaning small metal workpieces.
For the manufacture of sandblasting, the author uses improvised materials. The tank from the water pump acts as a container for sand.
From inside the tank (or as it is also called - the hydraulic accumulator), it will be necessary to pull out the chamber (membrane), which is filled with water, and all connections must be lubricated with sealant so that they do not allow air to pass through.
As a sand container, in addition to the tank from the water pump, you can also use a gas cylinder of the required volume or, for example, an expansion tank. The main thing is that the tank itself can withstand pressure of 10 atm without problems.
Design features sandblasting
In order for the sand inside the tank not to get wet from condensation, you need to install a dehumidifier.
Also, for the manufacture of a home-made sandblasting device, two reinforced hoses will be required (air or gas are suitable). The hose, which is thinner, the author uses to supply air. A mixture of air and sand will flow through a thick hose.
To assemble the entire system you will need two taps and a certain number of different fittings, adapters and tees, which you can buy in a plumbing store.
The author also uses a ceramic nozzle from argon welding, which is installed on the end of a thick reinforced hose. You can, of course, use an ordinary metal fitting, but it will not last long.
Sandblasting Process
First of all, the author collects the upper part of the system, which will be screwed to the cylinder. What fittings are used in this case, you can look at the photo below.
Sand will be poured through the brass tee - for this it will only be necessary to unscrew the plug. By the way, only quartz sand should be used for the sandblasting apparatus.
After that, you will need to assemble the lower part of the system: you will need a fitting, a coupling, a gas valve, an adapter from a large to a smaller diameter.
Sandblasting assembly
The tank from the water pump (hydraulic accumulator) is welded or bolted to a makeshift trolley welded from pieces of a profile pipe. A round pipe will need to make two stops.
In the process of assembling the sandblasting apparatus, the author decided to change the nozzle from argon welding to the car spark plug insulator.
After installing the entire system, we pour quartz sand into the tank, after which we can begin to clean the metal workpieces from rust.
